An Edgefield village hall disco reminded me exactly why I still love this job after 50 years. The guests arrived ready to celebrate, and the marquee was buzzing from the very first song.
I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim. I personally performed that evening, as I do at every booking. So here is how the celebration unfolded, plus some practical advice for anyone organising a similar party.
The Night at Edgefield Village Hall: A Disco in the Marquee
Edgefield Village Hall, North Norfolk
The party took place outside, in a spacious marquee beside the village hall. First, I positioned the speakers and lighting carefully during the late afternoon. Then the guests arrived, and the evening developed into something genuinely special.
Above all, everybody made me feel incredibly welcome throughout the evening. That warmth matters, because a friendly audience usually starts dancing much sooner. In fact, people crowded the dance floor within the first few records.
A marquee requires a little more attention than a traditional indoor function room. For example, I angle the speakers so the sound stays comfortably inside the canvas. I also keep every cable organised and well away from busy walkways.

Three Decades of Music in One Evening
Any retro party night ultimately depends on the music. So I build every set around the audience in front of me, rather than following a rigid list.
The 70s. I opened with classic disco, because those familiar rhythms bring older guests onto the floor immediately. My 70s disco classics playlist shows the type of music I rely on.
The 80s. Next came the synthesisers and enormous choruses, and the energy increased again. Practically everybody remembers every word of an 80s anthem, so expect plenty of singing. For inspiration, explore my 80s party anthems.
The 90s. Finally, the 90s carried everyone into the late evening with unstoppable energy. Younger guests usually take control of the dance floor at this point. My 90s club classics list includes the highlights.
Meanwhile, guests scanned a QR code and selected their own favourites from all three decades. Then I blended those song requests seamlessly into the mix as the celebration continued.
Tim’s tip: Rare tracks and forgotten gems often receive the loudest cheer of the evening. I have collected music since the 70s, so I can usually find the records everybody else has forgotten.
Capturing the Moment With the Selfie Pod
Alongside the disco, guests enjoyed my vintage white selfie pod with its flattering ring light. I configured it with decade themes, so every picture matched the atmosphere perfectly.
- Backgrounds: Guests selected colourful 70s, 80s or 90s scenery for every photograph.
- Stickers and filters: They added entertaining extras directly on the screen.
- Instant sharing: Every picture is digital, so guests sent photographs straight to their phones.
Plus, the queue for the pod quickly became a lively party of its own. Discover more on my Selfie Photo Wizard page.

Planning Your Own Village Hall Disco Like Edgefield
Would you like an evening similar to the Edgefield village hall disco? Then begin with these straightforward steps.
- Choose your decades. Select one era, or combine all three as we did.
- Reserve the hall early. Summer Saturdays disappear quickly across North Norfolk.
- Ask about electricity. A marquee may need a safe, reliable supply from the hall.
- Decide on a dress code. Fancy dress always adds atmosphere to a retro party night.
- Share your favourite songs. Then leave plenty of room for guest requests.
