Tim Daymond, Tinsel Tim

A great 80s party anthems playlist mixes nostalgia with real dance floor energy. I’m Tim Daymond, known as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a DJ since 1976. So I played these records when they were brand new.

I’ve grouped my top 20 into four sets. That way, you can see how an 80s evening builds towards its biggest moments.

The Floor Fillers That Open My 80s Party Anthems Playlist

First, the five tracks that pull people from their seats within seconds. They work because they combine pop, rock and soul, so they appeal to everybody simultaneously.

Song Artist Why it works
1. Don’t Stop Believin’ (1981) Journey The ultimate singalong, best in the first third of the night
2. I Wanna Dance with Somebody (1987) Whitney Houston Pure joy, with a key change built for dancing
3. Summer of ’69 (1985) Bryan Adams The opening guitar riff moves people before the vocal starts
4. Billie Jean (1982) Michael Jackson One of the most perfectly crafted dance records ever made
5. Livin’ on a Prayer (1986) Bon Jovi The final key change raises every arm in the room

Through a professional sound system, these recordings deliver punchy bass and crystal-clear vocals. Consequently, the dance floor fills almost immediately.

Synth-Pop: The Sound of the Decade

Next, the electronic sounds that defined the 80s. In fact, drum machines, shimmering synthesisers and processed vocals still feel remarkably exciting today.

Song Artist Why it works
6. Don’t You Want Me (1981) The Human League Sheffield synth-pop at its finest
7. Tainted Love (1981) Soft Cell The opening bars trigger an instant reaction
8. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983) Eurythmics Still surprisingly modern after 40 years
9. Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1983) Cyndi Lauper Unapologetic joy and an essential choice
10. Gold (1983) Spandau Ballet New Romantic drama with a powerful chorus

Meanwhile, I set my lighting to electric blue, hot pink and lime green. As a result, your venue feels like a genuine 80s nightclub, even in a village hall.

Peak-Time Anthems on My 80s Party Anthems Playlist

After that, these peak-time anthems arrive once the room is warm and everyone is ready to commit.

Song Artist Why it works
11. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go (1984) Wham! Horns, handclaps and boundless energy
12. Footloose (1984) Kenny Loggins A movie soundtrack favourite that nobody resists
13. Walking on Sunshine (1985) Katrina and the Waves Spontaneous arms-in-the-air moments
14. The Best (1989) Tina Turner Stadium-sized emotion from a remarkable voice
15. The Final Countdown (1986) Europe The dramatic intro creates a shared pause before the band kicks in

Also, guests send QR code requests from their phones. Consequently, personal favourites join the set without anybody leaving the dance floor.

New Wave and Rock: The Bigger Picture

Finally, new wave and rock gave the decade its backbone. These five tracks complete the list.

Song Artist Why it works
16. Come On Eileen (1982) Dexys Midnight Runners Slow and intimate, then building to a joyful finish
17. Baggy Trousers (1980) Madness Ska energy that moves even reluctant dancers
18. You Shook Me All Night Long (1980) AC/DC Every 80s party needs one hard rock moment
19. Town Called Malice (1982) The Jam Paul Weller’s Motown-influenced classic
20. Never Gonna Give You Up (1987) Rick Astley Often the biggest crowd reaction of the night

Because I play every era, I can also blend these rock classics with modern hits. So the energy continues whenever the room demands it.

Using This 80s Party Anthems Playlist on the Night

A playlist is only the starting point. Above all, the real skill is reading the room and choosing the perfect moment for each song.

  • New Romantic crowd? Then I go deeper into Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and Depeche Mode.
  • Rock fans? Then I pivot to the big guitar anthems without missing a beat.
  • Need a breather? Instead of stopping, I find a track that holds everyone on the floor before the next peak.
  • Other decades: If the floor needs a boost, I can blend in 70s funk or 90s pop.

I cover every 80s style, including synth-pop, ska, post-punk, electro-pop, big rock and every famous movie soundtrack. So if it came out in the 80s, I almost certainly have it.

Tim’s tip: Save The Final Countdown for a big moment. That dramatic pause before the band starts creates a reaction only a live DJ can deliver.

Fancy Dress Nights and Family Parties

Neon, leg warmers and shoulder pads all suit my 80s sets. Also, fancy dress evenings are especially popular for milestone birthdays, charity fundraisers and end-of-term celebrations.

Of course, I’m happy to host a costume competition, read out dedications and add personal announcements. For more ideas, read my fancy dress party guide.

Most 80s hits are already radio-friendly. Even so, my software cuts swearing from tracks during playback, so children and grandparents can enjoy every song.

I’m Trading Standards Approved, with £10 million public liability insurance, PAT-tested equipment and an Enhanced DBS check. For the complete themed package, see my retro disco hire page. Alternatively, read how I plan a full 80s disco night in East Anglia.
