As a fancy dress party DJ, I know the music is half of what makes a theme work. The wrong playlist can disappoint even the most creative costumes. However, the right one makes the whole night.
I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a DJ since 1976. So I’ve played much of this music since it originally appeared in the charts. Use this guide to plan your party, then give me a call.
What a Fancy Dress Party DJ Actually Does
Anyone can put on a costume, but building the perfect set takes experience. For example, I know which 80s track opens a floor and which one empties it.
- Reading the costumes. I notice which characters arrive, then match the music to the room.
- Mixing the eras. Authentic songs create the atmosphere, then familiar favourites keep everyone dancing.
- Managing the mood. Some themes need two different atmospheres in one evening.
- Keeping it clean. My software cuts swearing out of tracks, so family events stay family friendly.
Guests can also request songs by QR code. Then you organise your must-plays and do-not-plays in your personal client portal.

Here are the ten themes I play most frequently. Each one comes with a few reliable tracks, so you can imagine the evening.

Fancy Dress Party DJ Tips for Tricky Themes
Most themes are straightforward. Still, a few need additional planning, and this is where experience really counts.
The Great Gatsby Night
Pure 1920s jazz sounds authentic, but it’s difficult to dance to for three hours. So I open with swing classics, then move into electro-swing and modern songs with a vintage feel. As a result, a Great Gatsby night keeps its glamour and a busy floor. Feather boas and photo booth props then complete the look.

The Murder Mystery Evening
A murder mystery evening needs two moods in one night. First, I play atmospheric film music that maintains the tension. Then, after the reveal, the room opens up into a full dance party. That transformation is one of my favourite moments of any themed celebration.
Halloween for Adults and Children
Adult evenings and children’s afternoons need completely different sets. In fact, a Halloween fancy dress party for children is a separate plan altogether. For younger guests, I keep the music age-appropriate and the energy carefully paced. I also hold an Enhanced DBS check. Halloween fancy dress dates fall in late October and early November, so they fill quickly.
Tim’s tip: for a neon UV party, the first three songs matter most. Start energetically and stay there, because the crowd needs to feel it immediately. Above all, a neon UV party should never dip early.
