A 60s soul Motown playlist brings every generation onto the dance floor. I’m Tim Daymond, known as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a DJ since 1976. Over five decades, I’ve watched these songs unite families at countless celebrations.
Below, I’ve arranged my top 20 into four sets, so you can see how a soul evening builds.
The Motown Giants on My 60s Soul Motown Playlist
First, the songs that created the Detroit sound at Berry Gordy’s famous hit factory. Their famous basslines and brass sections sound wonderful through professional speakers.
| Song | Artist | When I play it |
|---|---|---|
| 1. I Heard It Through the Grapevine | Marvin Gaye | A moody, irresistible groove |
| 2. My Girl | The Temptations | Everybody sings along |
| 3. Reach Out I’ll Be There | Four Tops | Dramatic and uplifting |
| 4. Stop! In the Name of Love | The Supremes | Hands up for the famous move |
| 5. Uptight (Everything’s Alright) | Stevie Wonder | Pure energy from a young genius |
I often open a soul set with these, because almost every generation recognises them immediately.
Dance Floor Dynamite
Next come the high-energy soul records that nobody can resist. In fact, this is where grandparents and grandchildren often dance together.
| Song | Artist | When I play it |
|---|---|---|
| 6. Rescue Me | Fontella Bass | Driving rhythm for a busy floor |
| 7. Soul Man | Sam & Dave | Horns that lift the whole room |
| 8. Heat Wave | Martha Reeves & The Vandellas | Fast, joyful and unstoppable |
| 9. Higher and Higher | Jackie Wilson | A guaranteed singalong |
| 10. Do You Love Me | The Contours | Everybody tries the dance moves |
Meanwhile, those punchy brass sections sound magnificent through proper speakers. Plus, my lighting matches their infectious energy all evening.

Smooth Soul for a 60s Soul Motown Playlist
After that, the gentler classics. Many couples choose these for their drinks reception or early evening, because they set a relaxed, happy mood.
| Song | Artist | When I play it |
|---|---|---|
| 11. My Guy | Mary Wells | Light and charming |
| 12. Stand By Me | Ben E. King | A timeless favourite for every age |
| 13. (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay | Otis Redding | Perfect for a sunny garden |
| 14. What’s Going On | Marvin Gaye | Soulful and reflective |
| 15. The Tracks of My Tears | Smokey Robinson & The Miracles | A beautiful slower moment |
Also, guests can send requests by scanning a QR code, so their personal favourites join the set.
The Big Finale
Finally, these anthems close my list of the most requested soul classics. Each one belongs at exactly the right moment for maximum impact.
| Song | Artist | When I play it |
|---|---|---|
| 16. Respect | Aretha Franklin | The Queen of Soul at full power |
| 17. I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) | Four Tops | Instant smiles everywhere |
| 18. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough | Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell | A wonderful duet for couples |
| 19. Dancing in the Street | Martha Reeves & The Vandellas | Brings everyone back to the floor |
| 20. Think | Aretha Franklin | A brilliant, high-energy finish |
Tim’s tip: Pair Ain’t No Mountain High Enough with a golden anniversary toast. The couple usually ends up dancing together.
Planning a Party Around Your 60s Soul Motown Playlist
The Detroit sound works brilliantly at weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. However, there’s much more to 60s soul than the famous hits.
- Northern Soul: I can include rare floor fillers for true soul fans.
- Weddings: Soul classics suit the drinks reception, the first dance and the evening party. See my wedding DJ packages for details.
- Anniversaries: For a 50th wedding anniversary, the songs from the year you married make the night personal.
- Your requests: Add must-plays and do-not-plays in your client portal before the party.
So whether you want pure Motown or some 50s rock and roll too, I tailor every set. For example, read about my 50s and 60s nights in Norfolk, or plan a golden anniversary party.
I’m Trading Standards Approved and fully insured, so your booking has real protection. Also, see my retro disco hire page for themed packages.
