Tim Daymond, Tinsel Tim

Choosing a Masonic ladies night DJ is different from booking a party DJ. The evening has a programme, cherished traditions and music cues that must land at exactly the right moment. I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve played formal dinners since 1976.

So I arrive in a dinner suit, speak with your toastmaster and already understand what happens next. Below, I explain how I plan each stage, from the reception to the closing circle.

Why a Masonic Ladies Night DJ Needs to Know the Programme

A ladies night follows a precise structure. Therefore, a DJ who misses a cue can embarrass the Master and the top table. That’s the last thing any lodge secretary wants.

Of course, every lodge has its own preferences. So I always ask about your version of the Grace and the order of the closing traditions. I also welcome special requests. The basics, however, I already know.

I’m also Trading Standards Approved, with £10 million public liability insurance and PAT-tested equipment. Hotels and historic venues usually ask for both. Your certificates wait in your client portal, ready to forward to the venue.

The Masonic Ladies Night, Stage by Stage

The Drinks Reception

First, guests arrive to subtle background music, such as classical pieces, jazz and gentle ballads. Nothing lively, because the evening hasn’t formally begun.

Dinner and Wine-Taking

Next, dinner music continues at a level where guests can talk easily across the table. Meanwhile, I watch the toastmaster throughout the meal. The music stops on his signal for each wine-taking, speech and toast, then resumes just as smoothly.

The Formal Traditions

I provide the traditional music in whatever combination your lodge prefers.

  • The Masonic Grace: piano instrumental or vocal version, confirmed in advance.
  • The Ladies’ Song: Here’s to Their Health in a Song.
  • Ladies from the East and West: if your tradition includes it.
  • The toast to the Ladies and the response: with the music paused throughout.

The President and His Lady’s First Dance

We confirm the song and version beforehand. Then, if you like, I announce the dance on the microphone. Finally, I guide the room gently from the formal programme into the disco.

The Closing Traditions

At the end, I play your closing music in the lodge’s preferred order. That might include Goodnight Ladies, Auld Lang Syne and For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow. Then Land of Hope and Glory and the National Anthem often follow.

How a Masonic Ladies Night DJ Works With Your Toastmaster

I wear a dinner suit and bow tie at every formal lodge event. In fact, I’ve never arrived at a Masonic dinner dressed any other way.

On arrival, I introduce myself to the toastmaster. Together, we agree the signals for wine-taking, speeches, toasts and music cues before anybody sits down. After that, his job is to run the programme, and mine is to support him quietly.

Tim’s tip: Send me your running order and toast list a week before. Then I can prepare every piece of music in the right order.

The Evening Disco After the Formalities

Once the formal programme ends, the evening becomes a celebration. Still, the atmosphere stays elegant, and the age range is often wide.

So I open with recognisable classics from the era of your most senior members. Then I build gradually through the decades, watching who is dancing. Strict tempo music is available for ballroom dancers, and guests can send requests by QR code.

Volume stays comfortable, so conversation at the tables continues. Plus, my software cuts swearing out of tracks during playback, so nothing awkward slips through. Fancy a lively interval? Then Boogie Bingo, my musical bingo game show, makes a lively interval.
