Tim Daymond, Tinsel Tim

Military ball DJ hire is not the same as booking a DJ for a party. A mess dinner has a formal programme, cherished traditions and music cues that must land at precise moments. Otherwise, any slip reflects on the PMC and the organising committee.

I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a DJ since 1976. Over the years, I’ve played mess dinners, summer balls and veterans’ reunions across East Anglia. So here’s exactly how I prepare.

Why Military Ball DJ Hire Needs a Specialist

The PMC should never have to manage their DJ. That’s why I arrive early, brief with the organising officer and walk through the programme. Then every cue is confirmed before the first guest sits down.

Paperwork matters too. Military venues usually ask for public liability insurance and PAT certificates before they grant access. I hold £10 million cover, and my equipment is PAT tested. You can download both certificates from your client portal and forward them to the mess.

I’m also Trading Standards Approved under the Norfolk County Council scheme (ID 0000457). In short, that independent check helps with any venue risk assessment.

Six Military Events and What Each Needs

Each military occasion has its own protocol, music brief and audience. Here’s how I approach them.

Mess Dinner or Dining-In Night

This is the most formal event of all. First comes the anteroom reception, then the mess call, Grace and dinner. Next come the toast to the King, the port and the speeches. After that, the evening entertainment begins.

Once, at a dining-in night, the top table arrived twenty minutes late. So I held the background music and adjusted the dinner timings quietly. As a result, the evening concluded formally, and no guest noticed the delay.

Summer Ball or Mess Ball

A summer ball is less formal, yet still a significant occasion. Spouses, partners and civilian guests attend. I cover everything from the receiving line music to the raffle and the final dance.

Regimental Dinner and Guest Night

This follows mess dinner protocol, with some relaxation for civilian guests. I source the regimental march in advance, so I never ask on the night. Then the post-dinner dancing becomes the main entertainment.

Also, I support the programme quietly rather than explaining it publicly. That way, first-time civilian guests simply enjoy the evening.

Ladies Dinner

Partners are the honoured guests, with specific toasts to the ladies. Therefore, I provide pre-dinner music, carefully paused dinner music, the formal sequence and a full evening disco.

Dining Out and Farewell Dinners

A dining out marks the departure of an officer or senior NCO. Beforehand, I take a brief on the departing member’s favourite music. So this is the one format where the soundtrack becomes personal.

Armed Forces Day and Veterans’ Events

These are relaxed, community-focused occasions. I hold an Enhanced DBS check, which matters when children attend Armed Forces Day events. Meanwhile, the music stays patriotic, celebratory and suitable for every age.

The Music Cues Behind Good Military Ball DJ Hire

These cues separate a formal event DJ from a general party DJ. I prepare all of them before the evening.

  • Grace: Complete silence comes first. So the music stops before the Padre rises, not when he begins.
  • The Loyal Toast: God Save The King follows the toast immediately. Also, I know Royal Navy officers traditionally remain seated.
  • The regimental march: I request the correct march when you confirm the booking. For example, the Dam Busters March suits 617 Squadron events at RAF Marham.
  • Port passing: RAF and Army traditions differ. Therefore, I confirm your custom with the organising officer, rather than assuming.
  • The National Anthem: I play the current version of God Save The King to close formal proceedings.

Dress Code, Paperwork and the Pre-Event Briefing

I wear a dinner suit and bow tie at every military function. On arrival, I introduce myself to the PMC or organising officer. Together, we walk the programme, agree the cues and note any contingencies.

Before the event, I also confirm my arrival time, set-up needs and any base access requirements. Plus, your insurance and PAT certificates stay ready to download in the portal. After that, the organising officer shouldn’t need to think about the DJ until the last dance.

Tim’s tip: Send me the running order and your base access details early. Then I can complete any security paperwork well ahead of the date.

Military Ball DJ Hire Across Four Counties

I cover bases and formal venues right across East Anglia. Here are the main ones.

Counties covered

Norfolk and Suffolk

In Norfolk, I cover RAF Marham and Robertson Barracks at Swanton Morley. For civilian venues, the Assembly House in Norwich and Holkham Hall both suit formal dinners. In Suffolk, I cover RAF Honington, plus community events linked to RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. Hintlesham Hall also hosts formal dinners off base.

Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire

In Cambridgeshire, I cover RAF Wyton, RAF Wittering and IWM Duxford. Swynford Manor and Quy Mill Hotel also suit formal dinners. Then in Lincolnshire, I play RAF Coningsby, RAF Waddington, RAF Cranwell and RAF Digby. Stoke Rochford Hall is also a fine civilian setting.

For more venue ideas, see my Cambridgeshire venue guide and Lincolnshire venue guide. Or check the full list of areas I cover.

East Anglia also has a large veteran community. So I play regimental reunions, Royal British Legion dinners and Remembrance functions too, from village halls to hotel ballrooms.
