What the Norfolk Trusted Trader Scheme Is

Trusted Directory Services runs the scheme on behalf of Norfolk County Council Trading Standards. In simple terms, it’s a council-backed directory of local businesses that have passed independent vetting.

You can’t buy the badge or award it to yourself. Instead, every member completes a detailed application, including a face-to-face interview. In fact, roughly one in six applicants fail and receive a refund.

Membership also lasts just one year. So every member faces annual renewal, and the council can suspend or remove anyone who slips below the standard.

How the Norfolk Trusted Trader Scheme Vets a Business

The vetting covers 15 business checks and 7 checks on the owner. Here’s what that involved for me.

The business checks:

• Complaint searches on the Norfolk database and the national Citizens Advice database.
• A search of advertising rulings and health and safety enforcement notices.
• A review of my contract and terms for fairness, because unfair wording means automatic rejection.
• Checks on my website, social media, memberships and health and safety procedures.
• An authenticity check on the reviews I submitted.

The owner checks:

• Director and disqualified director register searches, plus a soft credit search.
• Confirmation of my public liability insurance.
• A face-to-face interview at my premises, with documents inspected in person.

As a result, the badge tells you that the council has seen the paperwork, not just my word. That’s why I’m proud to call myself Trading Standards Approved.

The Promises Every Member Makes

Every member signs the scheme’s code of practice. For example, it commits me to:

• clear written quotes and itemised invoices, with no hidden costs;
• fair and reasonable prices, with no pressure selling or cold calling;
• written booking confirmation before any work begins;
• insurance and PAT-tested equipment, with paperwork to prove it;
• handling any complaint promptly and fairly.

My approval covers seven categories. These are mobile discos, children’s parties, photo booth hire, disco equipment hire, entertainer, birthdays and anniversaries, and corporate events. So the same protection applies to my selfie pod and my children’s parties.

Your Protection if Something Goes Wrong

This is the part most customers never see, yet it matters most. First, you raise any concern with me directly. If we can’t settle it, you can contact Trusted Directory Services, who reply within five working days.

After that, an unresolved complaint can go to alternative dispute resolution through Kent County Council Trading Standards. The service is free for customers and covers claims up to £40,000. Above all, the decision binds the member, so I can’t simply ignore it.

Tim’s tip: Whoever you book, ask how they handle complaints. A clear answer tells you a lot about the business.

What Approval Does Not Mean

Honesty matters here. The scheme checks how a business trades, yet it doesn’t judge my music or mixing. It also doesn’t guarantee value or quality.

Instead, verified reviews show the quality side. The scheme moderates every review, and it randomly checks a quarter of good reviews with the customer. My profile currently shows 4.9 out of 5, and you can read more on my reviews page.

How to Check Any Trader

Trading Standards runs the Stamp Out Rogue Traders campaign to help people avoid rogue traders. So whoever you book, follow these simple steps.

1. Search the directory. Look up the business on the official Find a Trusted Trader page. My member ID is 0000457.
2. Ask for the member ID. A genuine member can give it to you straight away.
3. Read the reviews. Then compare them with Google and Bark.
4. Get everything in writing. Finally, keep your quote, contract and receipts together.
