Good DJ hire booking tips save you stress, money and an empty dance floor. I’m Tim Daymond, known on stage as Tinsel Tim, and I’ve been a professional DJ since 1976. So I’ve seen exactly what makes a booking run smoothly, and what usually trips people up.
This guide works for any celebration, for example birthdays, anniversaries, office parties, school proms and weddings. Below, you’ll find my practical advice, the questions worth asking, and the information your entertainer needs from you.
Ten DJ Hire Booking Tips for Any Celebration
- Look beyond the headline price. An unusually low quote may exclude insurance, professional lighting or proper planning time. So compare exactly what each price includes.
- Read recent reviews. Next, look for consistent comments about reliability, communication and a busy dance floor. Above all, check the dates on every review.
- Ask who will actually perform. Make sure the DJ’s name appears on your paperwork. That way, you know exactly who will arrive on the night.
- Request the safety documents. Many venues want public liability insurance and PAT certificates before any setup begins. Therefore, request both early.
- See the equipment. Simply ask for photographs or video from recent events. A confident professional will happily share them with you.
- Discuss the music in detail. Share a must-play list, your forbidden songs and the atmosphere you’re hoping for. Then your DJ can prepare properly.
- Agree the timings. Confirm arrival, setup, starting and finishing times. Also, check the venue’s access arrangements and its curfew.
- Mention any venue restrictions. Some village halls use a sound limiter or prohibit smoke machines. So pass these details on immediately.
- Book early for popular dates. Summer Saturdays and the Christmas season fill quickly. Start searching as soon as your venue confirms the date.
- Get everything in writing. A written contract protects both of you. In short, never pay a deposit without one.

The Questions to Ask Any DJ
These questions suit every type of celebration. Plus, I’ve included my own answers, so you can recognise a clear, confident reply.
- Can you check my date quickly? A professional makes this easy. For instance, my availability checker answers in under a minute.
- Do you travel to my venue? First, ask whether travel costs extra. I include travel anywhere in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.
- Are you insured and PAT tested? I hold £10 million public liability insurance, and I test my equipment every year. I’m also Trading Standards Approved under the Norfolk County Council scheme.
- Can we choose the music? Of course. You create your must-play list and do-not-play songs online. Meanwhile, guests can request songs from their phones by QR code.
- How loud will it be? I keep the dance floor energetic, yet guests can still chat comfortably at their tables.
- What will you wear? I dress to suit your occasion. So that means a suit for a formal dinner and smart casual for a birthday.

More DJ Hire Booking Tips: What to Tell Your DJ
Successful planning works in both directions. So the more information you share, the better your celebration will feel.
- The basics: your date, the type of celebration and approximately how many guests are coming.
- The venue: the address, any stairs or lifts, and the location of the electrical sockets.
- The timings: when the venue opens for setup, and your preferred starting and finishing times.
- The space: roughly how much room the venue allocates for the entertainment.
Tim’s tip: Avoid posting “DJ wanted” in public social media groups. Instead, contact a few well-reviewed entertainers directly.
Not sure how much space or power you need? Then my guide to DJ equipment explains everything, including what happens when a venue has a sound limiter.
