Any honest Christmas party planning guide will tell you that December is the busiest month for entertainment. Offices, schools, charities, sports clubs and families all chase the same dates. Therefore, the earlier you start, the more choice you’ll have.

My own December Fridays and Saturdays usually go to my Dunston Hall residency. However, midweek evenings and daytime school slots stay open across all four counties.

Why a Midweek Christmas Party Works So Well

Many organisers only discover this when Saturdays have gone. Yet a midweek Christmas party is often the better choice.

• Lower venue costs. Many venues charge noticeably less from Sunday to Thursday, so your budget goes further.
• Better attendance. Guests have no competing weekend plans, so more people come.
• Great atmosphere. Everybody in the room chose to be there, and it shows.
• Easier mornings. Staff can celebrate properly without spoiling a precious weekend.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the most popular midweek nights for work parties. Of course, I bring exactly the same preparation to a Tuesday as to a Saturday.

Planning an Office Christmas Party

At an office Christmas party, your DJ represents your company, so professional conduct matters. I arrive early, dress smartly and work to your schedule for dinner, speeches and awards.

Volume matters, too. During dinner and drinks, colleagues want to talk, so I keep the music in the background. Then I build the energy once the tables clear. For larger events, my corporate DJ hire guide has more detail.

Planning a Private Christmas Party

By contrast, private parties feel warmer and more personal. Family, old friends and neighbours share one dance floor. So I plan the music with you beforehand, using your client portal and must-play list. Then I build a festive playlist that suits your crowd.

Your Christmas Party Planning Guide to Music

Christmas songs are essential, of course. However, too many festive tracks back to back can empty a dance floor. Instead, I weave them into a wider festive playlist across four stages.

1. Setting the mood: Relaxed festive favourites from Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Wham! and Slade, at conversation volume.
2. Building up: Party anthems from every decade, mixed with seasonal favourites, as guests start dancing.
3. The peak: Next come the big ones. Think All I Want for Christmas Is You and Fairytale of New York. Then Step Into Christmas and Merry Christmas Everybody.
4. Winding down: A few slower songs and emotional Christmas classics to send everyone home smiling.

Guests can also request songs live by scanning a QR code. In addition, my software cuts swearing out of tracks during playback, which suits mixed company perfectly.

School and Children’s Christmas Discos

When you plan a school Christmas disco, safeguarding always comes first. So always ask any DJ for proof of a DBS check, not just a verbal promise. I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate, and you’ll find it in your client portal.

Common Christmas Party Mistakes

• Leaving it too late. November enquiries for December weekends rarely succeed.
• Choosing on price alone. After all, your guests look forward to this night all year, so value matters more than the lowest quote.
• Not agreeing the music. Discuss the balance of festive songs and party anthems in advance.
• Ignoring venue rules. Finishing times and sound limiters also affect the whole evening.
• Skipping the paperwork. Always get a written contract, because it protects both sides.
